Get to know your local store.  Since you pay for the time you keep the equipment, it makes since to minimize travel time and to use the closest store to your home or work site.  However do understand, not all rental stores are alike.  General tool and equipment stores, like Triad Equipment, rent to homeowners and businesses.  Some stores focus more on their contractor business because it takes more time and labor to explain tools to homeowners.  Triad Equipment welcomes homeowners and has the staff to answer your questions.  Here at Triad Equipment we welcome every customer who enters our store with a smile, we take the time to talk with you about your project and the equipment you'll need to get your job done.  We make sure each and every customer who comes into our store leaves with no unanswered questions.

Understand the equipment.  If you ever entered a rental yard you will be amazed at the variety of machines and tools you can rent.  You may not know which machine is best for your job, but a knowledgable staff will listen to you problem and propse the best solution.  Triad Equipment for instance has four types of trenchers, five types of tillers and six types of augers!  After selecting the best tool, make sure you understand how to operate it and transport it safely.  Don't assume that the tiller will fit in your SUV, you may need to rent a trailer or have us deliver the equipment for you.  We want to make the rental safe for you, your vehicle and our equipment.  If you are renting a backhoe or something fairly big that you are not fimiliar with, ask for a time you can come by and test-drive the equipment.

Understand the rental contract.  Understand the rate structure of course, but also make sure you understand all applicable charges and your resposibility to return the equipment undamaged.  Most companies, like Triad Equipment, don't bill you up front for the rent, but ask for a credit card or check to hold as security.  On your return you are billed only for the time away from the lot.  The equipment is sent out with full fuel, and you are charged only if you don't replace what you use.  Most companies have a minimum rental period (either two or four hours), then an hourly rate and a daily rate.  A day rate is good for a 24 hour period, limited to eight hours of machine use.  Most offer weekly and monthly rates.  Some stores consider that a day ends at business closing.
